The philanthropist has been committed to giving away at least half of her wealth to charity throughout her lifetime.
Through her organization, Yield Giving, novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott posted an open call for applicants for her next round of donations.

She will be donating a total of $640 million. Lever for Change, the organization that assisted with Scott’s donations, stated that 279 charities will receive $2 million each. Another 82 will receive $1 million each.
“In light of the incredible work of these organizations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount,” according to Lever for Change.

“The Open Call awardees are all making positive change in their communities by reducing disparities in economic outcomes, education, health, and other critical issues.”
“Grateful to Lever for Change and everyone on the evaluation and implementation teams for their roles in creating this pathway to support for people working to improve access to foundational resources in their communities. They are vital agents of change,” Scott wrote.
Ongoing Generosity
“This Open Call award helps us take our fight for justice and equity to the next level, continuing our work to dismantle the legal, structural, and cultural barriers that contribute to gender inequity,” stated Gender Justice, one of the beneficiaries.
The nonprofit advocacy group was one of the highest-scoring applicants, receiving $2 million. According to the organization, this is the largest one-time gift they have received in Gender Justice’s history.
Unlike other philanthropists, Scott breaks up her large donations to assist hundreds of smaller organizations. She also practices a “no-strings-attached” approach to her donations.
By March of 2022, she had already donated $3.8 billion to 465 nonprofit organizations. Scott has pledged to “give away this money with steadiness and care.”
