Shoe Avenue Takes Marikina Shoemaking Beyond Its Home Turf

By

At Spatio in Opus Mall, eight Marikina brands come together to show how local shoemaking continues to evolve.

Marikina has spent generations earning its reputation as the country’s shoe capital, yet most of its makers have sold their work from workshops and storefronts in the city itself. Shoe Avenue opened on September 24 inside the Spatio department store at Opus Mall, bringing eight Marikina shoe brands to Quezon City.

Zapateria, the footwear design hub founded by Unyx Sta. Ana, organized the space with Spatio. Unyx, whose family has made shoes since 1887, invited seven other Marikina brands whose values matched her own. She borrowed the name from a real Shoe Avenue in Marikina, a street created to honor the city’s workshops and storefronts, and she says the mall version shows how designers can express their own creative voices while still relying on the craft the city built.

The lineup covers a wide range of tastes. Alunsinang, a young label, made its name with the Pya Mules, which won recognition at the 2024 Global Footwear Awards, and it pairs classic silhouettes with modern details across the rest of its collection. Hayo designs eye-catching flip-flops around comfort and function. Bucroe started as a mass producer and now works as a house, making custom-fit leather dress shoes.

For daily wear, Posh Pocket sells foldable flats and ballerina shoes that pair with matching mini pouches, and Bida Loca makes colorful Bobbles as its signature alongside everyday leather essentials. Wumwum outfits toddlers and debuts with its Rascal sneakers, while Charis, the latest arrival, introduces itself with woven and leather mules. Zapateria also stocks pieces it developed through mentorships and collaborations with other makers.

The launch coincides with Spatio’s second anniversary, as its roster grows to 400 brands.
