What the Golden Globes Could Mean for Rami, Lady Gaga and the Oscar Race

The annual Golden Globes was held this morning at Hollywood. Tinseltown’s elite gathered for the HFPA’s (Hollywood Foreign Press Association) awarding ceremony, acknowledging the very best achievements in film and television. As per moviemaking tradition, the Golden Globes is just a pit stop to the biggest and most prestigious awards night of the year, the annual Academy Awards (or as the public likes to call it, The Oscars).

A victory or defeat at the Golden Globes could sink or propel any campaign towards Hollywood’s Golden Boy. Today, as we witnessed, many favorites sank, while unexpected winners put momentum on several movies. We’ve decided break it down for you the best way we can…

BEST PICTURE & BEST DIRECTOR

Winners:

Best Picture – Drama: Bohemian Rhapsody
Best Picture – Musical or Comedy: Green Book
Best Director – Alfonso Cuarón, Roma

With Bohemian Rhapsody and A Star is Born campaigning for Drama, the Musical or Comedy category was free game. Support for Green Book was big at the Golden Globes. It won Supporting Actor (Mahershala Ali) and Screenplay earlier in the evening, making it the obvious choice for Best Picture. A Star is Born losing is a very bad sign. The film is exactly the type of movie the Globes go for (big stars, huge box office). Passing it over for the badly reviewed Bohemian Rhapsody is a showing sign that industry support is dwindling. We still think Roma is the Best Picture frontrunner (Globes don’t nominate Foreign Films in their Best Picture categories) for the Oscars. It is one of the best reviewed films of the year and has widespread acclaim and support. We think the Oscar lineups will look like this:

Best Picture:

  1. Roma
  2. Green Book
  3. A Star is Born
  4. Bohemian Rhapsody
  5. The Favourite
  6. Black Panther
  7. BlacKkKlansman
  8. If Beale Street Could Talk
  9. Vice
  10. Mary Poppins Returns

Best Director:

  1. Alfonso Cuarón, Roma
  2. Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
  3. Spike Lee, BlacKkKlansman
  4. Peter Farrelly, Green Book
  5. Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite

BEST ACTOR

Winners:

Best Actor – Drama: Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
Best Actor – Musical or Comedy: Christian Bale, Vice

Rami Malek winning over Hollywood’s current Golden Boy, Bradley Cooper, is a big thing that can’t be ignored. People expected A Star is Born to sweep, and yet, it only garnered one win (in the Original Song category). But we’re not counting Bradley Cooper out quite yet. If he wins the SAG (Screen Actors Guild—which we think he will) or BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts), then the Oscar is his. Rami (who was underestimated) is his biggest competition now. We’ll have to wait and see. Right now, we’re putting Rami on the top of our Oscar predictions, since Bohemian Rhapsody is just way too popular right now to ignore.

We think Oscar will go for…

  1. Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
  2. Bradley Cooper, A Star is Born
  3. Christian Bale, Vice
  4. Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
  5. John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman

BEST ACTRESS

Winners:

Best Actress – Drama: Glenn Close, The Wife
Best Actress – Musical or Comedy: Olivia Colman, The Favourite

Gaga was the presumed favorite for today. The Golden Globes love awarding pop stars, but we feel like they wanted to spread the wealth out a little bit. Since Gaga won at the Original Song category, they gave their Best Actress award to Glenn Close. We think this will be an Oscar pattern. Gaga wins for her song “Shallow”, Glenn Close will compete directly with Olivia Colman (who also won tonight for The Favourite). Colman and Close are respected thespians, and the actors voting for the Oscars will keep that in mind. We think Colman will win BAFTA (she’s British, so she has a hometown advantage) and Close will win the SAG. They will battle it out till Oscar night, where Glenn will come out as the eventual winner.

We think Oscar will go for…

  1. Glenn Close, The Wife
  2. Olivia Colman, The Favourite
  3. Lady Gaga, A Star is Born
  4. Emily Blunt, Mary Poppins Returns
  5. Melissa McCarthy, Will You Ever Forgive Me?

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR & ACTRESS

Winners:

Best Supporting Actor: Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Best Supporting Actress: Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk

We think the Academy will want to award If Beale Street Could Talk somewhere. Regina King, who is currently going through somewhat of a resurgence in Hollywood right now (after years of brilliant character work), would be the appropriate way to do it. Plus, she is highly received in the film and seems to be everybody’s choice this season. We’re not 100% sold on Mahershala Ali winning a second Oscar so soon (he just won for Moonlight two years ago), but it doesn’t seem like any other contenders are getting enough passion. We’ll follow the Globe wins for now and put him on top of the list.

We think Oscar will go for…

Best Supporting Actor:

  1. Mahershala Ali, Green Book
  2. Sam Elliott, A Star is Born
  3. Timothée Chalamet, Beautiful Boy
  4. Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman
  5. Sam Rockwell, Vice

Best Supporting Actress:

  1. Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
  2. Amy Adams, Vice
  3. Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
  4. Emma Stone, The Favourite
  5. Claire Foy, First Man
