Juha Turalba Is Bringing Philippine Motorsport To Le Mans

By

As he prepares for his Ferrari Challenge Europe debut at Le Mans, Juha Turalba reflects on the years of preparation and discipline behind the opportunity, which marks a rare appearance by a Filipino driver on one of racing’s most prominent stages.

For most drivers, Le Mans represents an ambition so distant it can feel almost impossible. For Jose Antonio “Juha” Turalba, it’s now the setting for the next phase of a career that has taken him across racetracks. This June, the Filipino champion will make his debut in Ferrari Challenge Europe with Emil Frey Racing. He’s due to compete at Circuit de la Sarthe during one of the most closely watched weeks in international motorsport, placing him in a championship widely regarded as among the most competitive regional Ferrari Challenge series in the world.

Yet Juha doesn’t describe the opportunity as a sudden breakthrough. Rather, it’s the result of years spent building toward a moment that, like many opportunities in motorsport, arrived only after the preparation was already done. His path has taken him through karting, touring cars, endurance racing, and a dominant championship campaign in the 2025 Radical Challenge Philippines. Meanwhile, his engineering background has shaped a methodical approach to performance and problem-solving.

Ahead of his European debut, Juha speaks about preparing for the demands of Le Mans, the challenge of adapting to a new level of competition, the responsibility of representing the Philippines abroad, and the people and experiences that brought him to this point.

How did you specifically prepare for the jump to European competition?

Juha: This opportunity may seem sudden from the outside, but in many ways it has been years in the making.

I started racing when I was 9 years old and have spent my life around motorsport, competing in karting, touring cars, endurance racing, and most recently winning the Radical Challenge Philippines championship. Beyond racing, I am also an aerospace and mechanical engineer, which has shaped how I approach preparation and performance.

For this program, preparation has included simulator work, physical training, karting, studying onboard footage, reviewing data, and working closely with the team to understand the Ferrari 296 Challenge car. The goal isn’t just to drive fast, but to learn as quickly as possible. One thing racing teaches you is that opportunities often arrive with little warning. The real preparation happens long before the opportunity appears.

Le Mans is one of the most demanding circuits in the world. What’s your approach to learning a track of that scale and complexity under race pressure?

Juha: Le Mans is unique because of its length, its history, and speeds of over 300kph. It is also a circuit that demands complete commitment and concentration for an entire lap. At over 13 kilometers, it’s almost a small road trip compared to a normal race circuit. My approach is to break the track into smaller sections and understand the purpose of every corner rather than simply memorizing a lap. I focus on identifying where lap time comes from, where overtaking opportunities exist, and where the biggest risks are.

The simulator has been a valuable tool, but there is no substitute for the real circuit. Once I arrive, the objective is to absorb information as efficiently as possible and build confidence step by step.Pressure is part of the experience, but I try to approach it as a learning exercise. The more methodical you are, the less overwhelming it becomes.

What does racing in Ferrari Challenge Europe actually mean to you personally? Do you feel a sense of responsibility representing the country on this stage?

Juha: It means a great deal to me. As a young racer growing up in the Philippines, Europe always felt like the heart of world motorsport. To have the opportunity to compete there, especially with Ferrari and during Le Mans week, is something I do not take for granted.

I do feel a responsibility to represent the Philippines well. Motorsport remains a niche sport in our country, and opportunities like this are rare. If my participation helps show younger Filipino drivers that international racing is possible, then that is something I would be proud of.

At the same time, I believe the best way to represent the country is through professionalism, preparation, and respect for the opportunity. My focus is on doing the job well and letting the results speak for themselves.

What does a successful debut look like for you and how do you define it for yourself?

Juha: A successful debut is not necessarily defined by a finishing position. I will be racing against drivers who have spent years competing in Europe and who know the circuits, teams, and championship inside and out. My goal is to maximize learning, adapt quickly, and extract the best performance I can from myself and the car.

If I can leave Le Mans knowing that I learned rapidly, avoided unnecessary mistakes, performed to my potential, and earned the respect of the team around me, I would consider that a successful debut. This is not the finish line. It is the beginning of a new chapter, and success for me is building a foundation for what comes next.

Who or what has been most important in preparing you for this moment?

Juha: Without question, my family, especially my father. He introduced me to racing at a young age and has supported me throughout the entire journey, from my karting days to where I am today. What makes it especially meaningful is that our relationship has evolved beyond simply parent and child. We now share the sport together as competitors and teammates.

We raced together in the Spec Miata series, and today we both competed in Ferrari Club Challenge Asia. Some of my favorite memories in motorsport are the ones we’ve shared at race tracks over the years. Having him alongside me through every stage of the journey has been incredibly special.

I have also been fortunate to learn from many people throughout my career, including coaches, engineers, mechanics, teammates, and fellow drivers who have shared their experience and knowledge.

More broadly, every part of my life has contributed to this moment. Engineering taught me how to think analytically. Flying helicopters taught me discipline and risk management. Working in business taught me responsibility and decision-making under pressure. When I arrive at Le Mans, I will not just be drawing on my racing experience. I will be drawing on everything that has shaped me along the way.
