BIRKENSTOCK’s The Philippines By Foot campaign featured a heritage walk through Manila that combined history, craftsmanship, and the joy of discovering familiar places from a fresh perspective.
A pair of BIRKENSTOCK sandals has been a staple in my wardrobe for the longest time. On days when I’m constantly on the move and need something comfortable without sacrificing style, I instinctively reach for my favorite pair. They’ve traveled with me through countless errands, trips, and tedious days. So when I was invited to be part of BIRKENSTOCK’s latest campaign, The Philippines by Foot, I was genuinely excited to collaborate with a brand I’ve trusted, worn, and relied on for years.
The campaign also took me somewhere I rarely venture: Pasay City. Although my university was only a few kilometers from the venue, I never really had a reason to explore the vast expanse of Manila’s historic districts. It was one of those places that always felt close enough, yet somehow remained unfamiliar. By the end of the program, I realized that was exactly the point of The Philippines by Foot: oftentimes, the most rewarding discoveries aren’t found on far-flung trips, but in overlooked places that’ve been within reach all along.

The Philippines By Foot: Walking Through Heritage
Travel usually begins with a plane ticket or a long drive, but BIRKENSTOCK wanted to prove that it can start with something much simpler: a walk. With The Philippines By Foot, the brand invites people to slow down and experience the country’s cultural landmarks one step at a time, encouraging a deeper appreciation for places that are often passed by without a second glance.
Held in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT) and the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), the campaign centers on the idea that every street has a story worth hearing. Rather than rushing from one destination to another, participants were encouraged to walk, observe, and learn. It felt fitting for a brand whose philosophy has always been rooted in movement, comfort, and everyday wear. After all, the best way to understand a place is to take the time to experience it at ground level.

A Piece Of BIRKENSTOCK History
Before the walk began, guests were welcomed into a small museum dedicated to BIRKENSTOCK’s long history. It was a reminder that the sandals many of us wear today are the result of centuries of craftsmanship and continuous refinement.
The exhibition traced the brand’s origins, beginning with its roots in Germany and the evolution of its signature footbed. Vintage advertisements, archival photographs, historical footwear, and milestones from across the decades showed how BIRKENSTOCK grew from a family shoemaking business into one of the world’s most recognizable footwear brands. Seeing the original footbed alongside more recent styles made it clear that while trends have changed, the brand’s commitment to comfort has remained remarkably consistent. As someone who has worn BIRKENSTOCK for years, it was fascinating to see the story behind something that has become such a familiar part of my wardrobe. You rarely stop to wonder how an everyday essential came to be until you see the history laid out in front of you.

From Kilometer Zero Onwards With BIRKENSTOCK
The heritage walk began at Kilometer Zero in Rizal Park, the point from which distances across the Philippines are measured. From there, our group made our way through some of Manila’s most significant landmarks, guided by stories that revealed details even frequent visitors might miss.

One stop that stayed with me was the exact spot where José Rizal was executed. Tucked away from the usual tourist trail, it’s one of those places you would easily walk past without realizing its significance. Standing there, away from the crowds, gave the moment a different kind of weight. There was no obvious or outward sense of grandeur, but the weight of significance comes from the realization that even the most pivotal chapters in Philippine history can happen in an unassuming or everyday place people take for granted.

It was hot that afternoon; walking around Manila under the sun is never easy, but my BIRKENSTOCK sandals remained comfortable from start to finish, letting me pay attention to the stories, rather than worrying about tired feet. By the end of the route, the knowledge I gained far outweighed the weather conditions.

The walk concluded with a warm, grand gathering where guests shared a meal and reflected on the experience. Conversations naturally shifted toward the places we had visited, the stories that surprised us, and how easy it is to overlook history hidden in plain sight. I arrived expecting a heritage walk and left with a renewed appreciation for Manila. The Philippines By Foot showed that discovering the country doesn’t always mean booking a flight to somewhere new. Sometimes, the most memorable journeys begin by slowing your pace, looking a little closer, and walking through a city you thought you already knew.
