The prestigious Princess of Asturias Awards recognized notable personalities in their respective fields. The awardees came from the fields of art, literature, and social sciences, among others.
The Princess of Asturias Awards honored laureates from different fields or sectors. The awarding ceremony pushed through at the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo, Spain.
Awardees of the prestigious honor came from the fields of art, literature, sports, social sciences, communication and humanities, international cooperation, concord, and technical and scientific research.
Familiar names came into light for the awards and among them are Meryl Streep and Haruki Murakami.
The Spanish Royal Family bestows the award to those who are chosen in their respective sectors. It aims to “contribute to extolling and promoting scientific, cultural, and humanistic values that form part of the universal heritage of humanity.”

The Princess of Asturias Awards laureates across eight fields
Actress Meryl Streep received the Asturias laureate for the field of art. 2006 Prince of Asturias awardee Pedro Almodóvar submitted Streep’s nomination and said that she is a truly worthy recipient due to her versatility as an actress.

Renowned author Haruki Murakami got conferred the Princess of Asturias laureate for literature. Murakami expressed his gratitude for the distinction. “You have made me reconsider the fact that my books are in the hands of many people around the world and so it is inevitable that I feel a great joy as a novelist,” he said.

Two of this year’s Princess of Asturias Award honorees died this year. French historian Hélène Carrère d’Encausse won the social sciences award, and Italian author and philosopher Nuccio Ordine bagged the communication and humanities prize. Their relatives received their awards in their honor.
U.S. biologists Jeffrey Gordon, Peter Greenberg and Bonnie Bassler received the scientific and technical research prize. The three awardees extended their thanks for getting the title and their intention to continue celebrating discovery, creativity, and achievement.

Scottish group Mary’s Meals won the concord award for its work feeding school children facing extreme poverty across the globe. Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge won the Asturias Award for sports.

The awardees‘ opulent rewards
The Associated Press reported that the Princess of Asturias Awards are important, especially to the Spanish.
The award aims to consolidate the connection between the Principality of Asturias and the title the heirs to Spain’s crown held.
Spanish Crown Princess Leonor presented the winners their awards. The laureates received 50,000 euros ($53,000) and a sculpture by Spanish Catalan artist Joan Miró as well.
