A Word With Johnny K, The Man Behind Meet Cutes Manila

By

Johnny Kang, known by his internet name “Johnny K,” is the Korean-Canadian creator behind Meet Cutes Manila, a series where he stops couples to ask about love, connection, and how their own relationships came to be.

Love is a sustaining force. It keeps people moving, gives them something to hold on to. Yet sometimes, it does the opposite: it stops us in our tracks. “Are you guys a couple?” It’s a simple question, but one that has made countless couples in Salcedo pause mid-walk and turn their attention to a man holding a sunflower like a microphone. Behind the question is Johnny Kang (better known as “Johnny K”), the popular content creator behind Meet Cutes Manila, a series featuring his spontaneous conversations with couples in the Makati spot.

In this interview with Lifestyle Asia, we get to know the Johnny behind the microphone, sunflower, and questions, discovering what drives his penchant for finding stories of love in every corner of the neighborhood.

Who Was Johnny Kang Before He Started Meet Cutes Manila?

Johnny is Korean by heritage, but was born and raised in Canada. This begs the question: how did a Korean-Canadian end up making content—and a life—for himself here in the Philippines? Well, much like the couples he meets at the Salcedo weekend market, his relationship with the Philippines is a meet-cute story of its own.

Before becoming a TikTok For You Page favorite, Johnny was a business owner in Canada. When I asked him about his business during the shoot, he answered with a grin: “Pasalubongs.” He owned a shop in Niagara Falls that sold the kind of knick-knacks and tchotchkes tourists pick up along the way. Eventually, he had the opportunity to sell the business, and decided to take it. “A lot of people wait until retirement to do a lot of traveling or live their life, so I decided I was going to do that now,” he tells Lifestyle Asia.

After selling his business, Johnny picked up his backpack and watched his world open up. He traveled through Asia, spending around three months in Korea along the way. It was a chance to reconnect with his heritage and get to know a part of himself he’d never experienced firsthand. “As much as I enjoyed discovering my heritage and my background, it didn’t really quite click as a place for me,” he shares. So, he kept traveling; eventually, his journey brought him to the Philippines.

“When I got to the Philippines and I landed in Manila, I really fell in love with a lot of the people I met, and the ,” he shares. “When I decided to really give it a chance and move here, I met some people from my first week that made it home right away.”

It has now been more than a year since Johnny arrived in Manila, but his relationship with the country seems far from temporary. If anything, he has already made up his mind about where this chapter is going. “When I landed here, I felt very at home, and I was like, ‘This is a place where I want to stay,’” he says. Judging by the way he tells it, he’s not planning on leaving anytime soon.

What Inspired Johnny Kang To Create Content?

When asked why he started creating content, Johnny gives a simple answer: “I just really enjoy stories.” Content creation, for him, is an extension of that fascination. “I’ve always been someone that enjoys art and storytelling,” he adds.

He traces this interest back to his childhood. Growing up with his single mother and grandmother, whom he calls halmoni, Johnny spent a lot of time on his own. His mother worked often, while his grandmother wasn’t fluent in English. The result? An early and intimate relationship with the internet. Unsurprisingly, the content he gravitated toward was rooted in human interest and real-life experiences. Johnny cites Preston Rack, Eric Jeng, and Humans of New York among his inspirations, drawn to the way they turn ordinary people and their stories into compelling content.

But it was Meet Cute NYC that eventually gave him the push to pick up his iPhone and start asking couples a question of his own.

Why Film Meet Cutes Manila At Salcedo Weekend Market?

For Johnny, the answer was almost instinctive. The first time he stepped into the market, he immediately noticed a change in the atmosphere. “There’s something special about this place,” he remembers thinking. “It was like an event. Everyone was there to, like, dress up, look cute. The Salcedo girlies are dragging their boyfriends around in matching polka dot dresses and striped shirts. I just felt like this warm, loving energy in the air.”

It’s the kind of place where love seems to be everywhere, not necessarily in grand declarations, but in the little things: couples wandering from stall to stall, matching outfits, weekend dates, and people simply enjoying being together. For Johnny, it’s the perfect setting to ask questions about connection.

Why The Topic Of Love?

For Johnny, love was always going to find its way into his content. He describes himself as someone who has always been fascinated by it, even before he started stopping couples in Salcedo with a sunflower in hand. “Do what you love, and you don’t work a day in your life. And I love love,” he says. “I always joke that other guys grew up talking about basketball or video games, but I’ve always just been interested in rom-coms and romance stuff.”

His fascination with love also comes from a more personal place. Growing up with a single mother who was often busy working, Johnny says he never really had a front-row seat to what a romantic relationship looked like. That curiosity stayed with him, eventually becoming something he wanted to explore through the stories of other people.

“I never saw a functional relationship before. My mom never dated, always working. I think I felt like an outsider on how love works, or like [how] a functional relationship works,” he shares.

This explains why his conversations with couples go beyond the meet-cute itself. Talking to more than 500 couples has reinforced Johnny’s belief that love exists, and it’s both action and conscious choice. He’s heard stories from couples who’ve navigated different stages of relationships, including challenges, long-distance relationships, and compromises.

Johnny is interested in what happens after the butterflies, the first date, and the beginning of a relationship. His series may start with a question about how two people met, but it often ends somewhere much more intimate: how they choose each other, understand each other, and continue loving each other through the years. “I just felt like if I’m going to make content or, you know, drag people into conversations with me, I want it to be about love,” he says.

The Art Of Dialogue

For someone who built an audience by approaching complete strangers, Johnny has come to see conversation as its own form of creative expression. “Something that I only realized, maybe like a year or so ago, is that conversations are an art form as much as painting or singing or dance,” he says.

That realization has given Johnny a new way to understand what he’s been doing all along. He spends his weekends meeting people and collecting their stories, then his weekdays turning those conversations into something that can be shared with an audience. There’s a creative process behind every video, from the questions he asks to the moments he chooses to keep.

“I have a lot of creative energy, and I never really had an outlet to express it,” he shares. Now, he does. Through his content, Johnny has found a space where his curiosity about people and his love for storytelling can meet. He describes spending hours editing, taking the conversations he has gathered and shaping them through his own interpretation. “I feel like I’m creating art, which makes me an artist,” he adds.

There’s a sense of pride in the way he talks about it. Creating content has brought him into the orbit of other artists, storytellers, and creators he admires, and allowed him to see himself as part of that community, too. For Johnny, it all comes back to people. A conversation starts with a stranger, turns into a story, and becomes something that can live beyond the two people who had it. In his world, even a simple question about love can open the door to something much bigger.

More Than Just Meet-Cutes

For someone who built his platform by asking strangers about their relationships, Johnny’s curiosity transcends romance. He wants to keep having conversations about the many ways people experience love: through relationships, family, friendship, and even the connection we have with ourselves.

“I want to talk about grief more; I want to talk more about people’s journeys through life, the experiences that they’re having. Familial love, self-love, all those kinds of conversations,” he explains.

This might just be what keeps Johnny walking around Salcedo with a sunflower in hand, stopping strangers in their tracks. He starts with a question about how two people found each other, but the exchange becomes about the far bigger aspects of being a part of someone’s life: why people stay, how they care for one another, and all the little ways love shows up.

For Johnny, there will always be another person to meet, another story to hear, and another question to ask. That’s the spirit of a true meet-cute: the moment a stranger stops, opens up, and lets someone else into their story.
