Lena Dunham is reuniting the original cast of HBO’s millennial comedy for five new episodes about life beyond their twenties.
10 years after Girls signed off, Hannah Horvath and her friends are preparing to reenter our screens, presumably with new grievances . HBO is bringing Lena Dunham’s millennial comedy back for a limited five-episode run, with production set to begin in 2027. The series originally aired for six seasons from 2012 to 2017, following four women navigating careers, relationships, and the many indignities of their twenties in Buzzfeed-pilled, hipster-era Brooklyn.

The Girls Are Back In Session
The revival was announced through a mock video call featuring Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet. Dunham will reprise Hannah; Williams returns as Marnie Michaels; Kirke as Jessa Johansson, and Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro. Andrew Rannells is also set to return as Elijah. All five actors will serve as co-executive producers. Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s volatile love interest Adam, hasn’t been announced as part of the revival, and neither has original co-showrunner Jenni Konner.
Behind the scenes, Dunham will executive produce alongside Judd Apatow, Ilene S. Landress, and Michael P. Cohen. Plot details remain under wraps, though Dunham told Variety that the cast always intended to reunite only when they had a story worth telling. The idea took shape around her 40th birthday, when the characters began making their way back into her imagination. In 2022, HBO executives said no revival was in the works.
The premise offers fertile ground for a series that made a virtue of its characters’ inability to get their lives together. In its original run, Girls examined the gap between the futures its protagonists imagined and the realities they inhabited. Add in several romantic disasters and professional missteps to the mix.

At 40, the women may have different problems. The question is whether Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna have developed better judgment.

No release date has been announced, and filming is set to begin in 2027. Further casting details and a premiere window are expected in the coming months.
