By working as a luggage porter at the London hotel, Guccio Gucci learned what luxury customers wanted.
The Savoy is one of the first luxury hotels built in London. For 132 years now, the five-star hotel has been a “magnet” to the wealthy and famous visiting the UK capital. Some of their most famous guests include singer Frank Sinatra, comic Charlie Chaplin, French theater actress Sarah Bernhardt, and Marilyn Monroe.
Guccio Gucci once worked at The Savoy as a luggage porter. He assisted the hotel’s guests by carrying their leather luggage and escorted them to various areas of the large hotel; at the same time, he observed the needs and desires of the luxury consumer.
During this time, the founder of Italian fashion house Gucci was inspired to begin his own leather goods company once he returned to his home country Italy.
The Royal Suite by Gucci
To pay homage to the relationship between the two heritage brands, The Savoy opens a suite that reflects the world of Gucci this year. The Royal Suite by Gucci marks 100 years since Guccio founded his Italian luxury fashion house inspired by his experiences working at The Savoy.
In the suite that runs through the length of the hotel’s fifth floor (2,853 square feet), everything from its decor to furniture is sourced from Gucci’s century-old history and the Gucci Décor Collection. However, particular art pieces were curated by the auctioneers of British auction house Christie’s to select antiquities that merged the Gucci and The Savoy aesthetic.
If you find a piece that catches your eye, all the Gucci decor and Christie’s items are available for purchase.
Included perks
