Furniture Fashion: These Designers Are Injecting Their Signature Styles Into Home Pieces

Virgil Abloh, Rodarte, and Fred Segal inject their artistry and signature elements in these furniture collaborations.

Apparently, many of us started investing more in home furnishings in the past year. Last December, the South China Morning Post reported that thousands of Filipinos engaged in home-improvement projects, resulting in an online shopping boom.

To go along with that boom is also a spike in cross-industry projects, particularly between fashion and home design. And, as you all know, we love a good collab here at Lifestyle Asia. Here are our recent favorites:

Virgil Abloh x Ikea

Known for his streetwear brand Off-White and his work at Louis Vuitton where he serves as the artistic director for menswear, Abloh brought his innovative designs to Ikea. “MARKERAD” is the limited collection’s Swedish title, which simply means “marked.” The collaboration means to add an “artful quality to anonymous objects.”

The homeware collection marries Abloh’s signature elements such as quotation marks and orange tags with Ikea’s minimal and practical aesthetic.

Given Off-White’s cult following, Ikea anticipates a high demand for Abloh’s collection when it releases in all its stores on November 1. According to Ikea’s website, customers can start lining up for wristbands in stores by 7 am. Every customer with a wristband is entitled to only one MARKERAD piece each. And since Ikea is opening its biggest outlet in Pasay this July, you can pick the piece you want as early as now.

Rodarte x The Rug Company

Last March, Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the sisters behind Rodarte, released their second collection of floor mats under The Rug Company. Their first collaboration with the artisanal rug brand came in 2014.

Similar to many of their runway collections, the California natives gained inspiration for both rug collections from the landscapes of where they grew up. With California’s nature views as their constant muse, the style-forward rugs also highlight Rodarte’s affection for the 1970s.

Growing up, the designer duo told Vogue, they always admired the beautiful California poppies in bloom, and finding their mother’s artwork from the ’70s brought this inspiration full circle.

CB2 x Fred Segal

CB2, Crate & Barrel’s sister company, taps Fred Segal for a collection of serveware, seating, and swimming pool accessories, which uses the “Los Angeles Cool” clothing brand’s signature red and navy blue palette.

Segal, who passed away last February, rose to fame in the sixties, and became known for designing “breezy, sexy, and relaxed” pieces. That’s why it’s no surprise that the label came out with a selection of furniture that emulates the same themes, but this time under creative director Lizz Wasserman.

One particularly interesting piece in the collection is the Sunset Teak Outdoor Loveseat. It is water-resistant and spacious, with a width of 72 inches, and can be ideal for pool-side hangouts or informal cocktail parties.
