Keep It Simple: Scarlett Johansson’s New Skincare Brand Wants to Make Beauty Uncomplicated

The Outset eliminated over 2,700 “questionable sourced” or potentially harmful ingredients in their product range.

In general, the skincare industry is already pretty saturated. Brands cater to every market, from science-backed formulas to all-natural ingredient skincare. But now, there’s a new segment of celebrity-owned companies inviting you to get their zoom-in ready skin.

Scarlett Johansson’s The Outset comes after Rihanna’s Fenty Skin, Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty, Jessica Alba’s Honest Beauty, and many more. Despite the countless brands that came before hers, the Avengers actress believes there’s room for earth-friendly products that give back.

Positive change

“It’s uncomplicated, clean, and mindful, and we’re looking to effect positive change. We’ve partnered with Dress for Success to support women as they enter the labor force, we work with One Tree Planted, we’ve found all these paper alternatives [for our packaging], and we’re a member of 1% For The Planet. I think there is space for a brand like ours that looks to redirect the industry in a way,” she tells InStyle. “Yes, it is a very crowded space, but I think there’s space for that.”

Johansson’s been the face of Dolce & Gabbana beauty and L’Oréal Paris in the past. However, she reached a point where it “no longer felt desirable to represent other people’s beauty ideals.”

Being accountable

After five years of developing the line, The Outset offers a daily moisturizer, antioxidizing cleanser, and vegan collagen serum. According to The Outset’s website, there are no FDA standards for “clean” skincare.

In effect, the brand holds itself accountable for making formulas non-harmful. The brand says they’ve eliminated over 2,700 “questionable sourced” or potentially harmful ingredients.

Keeping it simple

The 37-year-old told Who What Wear that her products are in her daily skincare routine. “Actually, I always found that when I returned to the same basics—just cleansing, priming, and moisturizing my skin—it would be its best self. For so long, I was using all of these other products to just strip it away, and it took me a long time to understand that I was doing too much,” Johansson continued. “So when I was looking to create this line, I was curious to know what other people were looking for.

With The Outset’s five-piece product line, Johansson invites people to be liberated of complicated skincare routines, “every day is really an opportunity to start fresh.”
