“It’s our duty as designers to try new things and show a possible future,” Coperni’s co-founder Sébastien Meyer says. “We’re not going to make money on this, but it’s a beautiful moment—an experience that creates emotion.”
Joining the Spring/Summer 2023 season’s lineup of headline-worthy shows is Coperni at Paris Fashion Week. During the finale, Bella Hadid wearing nothing but a nude-colored G-string, walked to center stage.
That’s when the piece of performance art began. While standing still, Hadid was sprayed with a liquid containing cotton or synthetic fibers. According to Vogue Business, the technique was developed by Fabrican, founded by Spanish fashion designer and scientist Manel Torres. After a few minutes, the model was fully clothed in the Fabrican liquid, which transformed into a below-the-knee dress. It was then cut up to create an off-shoulder and leg slit detail. It took six months to develop the liquid formula.
Creating emotion
“It’s our duty as designers to try new things and show a possible future,” Coperni’s co-founder Sébastien Meyer tells the publication. “We’re not going to make money on this, but it’s a beautiful moment—an experience that creates emotion.”
In 1999, Alexander McQueen showcased a similar ode to where fashion and innovation meet. During the Spring show, Canadian model Shalom Harlow’s white dress was painted live by car-paint machinery.
