A New Chapter In Confidence

By

Sun Life Philippines names JJ Moreno as its Country Head and CEO, signaling a new chapter of steady leadership and forward momentum.

At a time when financial security feels more urgent than ever, Sun Life Philippines turns the page to a fresh chapter. Effective April 1, 2026, Jonathan Juan Moreno, widely known as JJ Moreno, steps into the role of Country Head and CEO, marking a carefully planned leadership transition that reflects both continuity and forward momentum.

With over two decades of experience leading strategic initiatives across financial services, technology, retail, transportation, and the public sector, Moreno previously served as President and CEO of AF Payments Inc., the fintech company behind the beep™ card, which helps millions of everyday Filipinos by transforming a transport fare system into a nationwide micropayment platform. His other leadership roles include Principal at Palladium Group Inc., Chief Strategy Officer at Metro Retail Stores Group, and Vice President at the Philippine Stock Exchange.

He succeeds Benedict Sison, whose 15 years of steady leadership defined an era at the company, one that will soon take on a new form shaped by Moreno’s distinct yet deeply aligned vision. Having already assumed an increasingly visible role within the organization over the past year, his appointment signals not just succession, but evolution. For Moreno, that evolution begins with how people think about financial security itself, which he hopes to develop with a focus on driving digital transformation and client-centered growth.

Not Just an Option

In a recent interview with Lifestyle Asia about his appointment, JJ Moreno reflects on one of the industry’s most persistent challenges: perception. Insurance, for many, remains an afterthought—something to consider only when there are excess resources to spare. But under his leadership, this misconception is debunked through a single truth: protection is foundational, not optional.

“I believe that financial protection should be perceived as infrastructure, not a luxury,” Moreno says. “You don’t build it when everything is perfect. You build it precisely so you’re ready when life isn’t.”

Rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all solution, Moreno’s approach reflects a broader philosophy that prioritizes individual lifestyles. It’s a perspective shaped by years within the organization, and one that continues to inform how Sun Life evolves alongside the needs of its clients.

With a wide array of financial products available, the real question becomes not what exists but what truly matters. For Moreno, the answer lies in clarity: understanding where you are in life, and what risks you cannot afford to leave unaddressed.

“Life doesn’t stand still, and neither should your financial plan,” he elaborates. “What matters is putting the right foundation in place early, then having the discipline to review and strengthen it as your life changes.” This emphasis on adaptability mirrors Moreno’s broader leadership style: grounded, but never static. It acknowledges that financial planning is not a one-time decision, but an ongoing process that requires both foresight and flexibility.

This philosophy of adaptability extends beyond spreadsheets and financial models—it also shapes how Moreno approaches every dimension in his life.

Balance Beyond The Boardroom

Beyond the boardroom, Moreno is deeply anchored by family—an aspect of his life he credits for shaping his sense of perspective and discipline. It is also home where he recalibrates and draws strength from the people who matter most to him.

When time allows, he stays active through golf, swimming, football, and interests that keep him grounded and competitive in equal measure. “These moments reset me,” Moreno shares. “They remind me that leadership, like life, requires balance.”

This sense of balance carries through to how Moreno leads. He approaches his role with the understanding that sustained performance—whether in business or in life—comes from knowing when to push forward and when to pause. It’s a mindset shaped by showing up consistently both at work and at home, where presence matters as much as results.

“Success isn’t measured solely by milestones achieved,” Moreno says. “It is also measured by the steadiness with which one navigates responsibilities, relationships, and change.”

Guidance That Grows With You

Under JJ Moreno’s leadership, Sun Life’s relationship-driven strategy is expected to deepen further, enhanced by digital innovation and a continued focus on accessibility. The goal isn’t just to simplify financial planning, but to make it more intuitive, responsive, and attuned to the realities of modern life.

But even as tools and platforms evolve, the core principle remains unchanged: protection comes first. Moreno emphasizes that securing one’s present through coverage that safeguards income, health, and long-term goals is the necessary foundation for any future growth. Once that foundation is in place, the opportunity to build wealth is made both possible and sustainable. It’s a strategy that rewards time, discipline, and early action—values he continues to champion as he steps into his new role.

Reflecting on the uncertainties ahead, Moreno offers clarity. “Since we cannot foresee the future, we need to take action in the present,” he says. “That’s why the most important decisions are the ones we make today. These decisions prepare us, not just for what’s planned, but for what isn’t.” It’s a simple idea, but it captures the essence of his leadership at this pivotal moment. As he takes the helm, he doesn’t just emphasize navigating uncertainty, but preparing for it with clarity, structured processes, and trust in the relationships that have made Sun Life the country’s leading life insurance company.

In many ways, the transition is less about change than it is about continuity, carrying forward a mission that has always centered on helping people live healthier, more secure lives. That mission remains intact, even as the path toward it continues to evolve. Because while the future may be unpredictable, the foundation you build today determines how confidently you can face it.
