On a manic Monday morning, when most of us would be trying to finish the day faster, Sam “SV” Verzosa delighted his staff and a few media members on a feastful brunch at Sala Bistro in Makati.
The esteemed congressman, dressed simply in a white polo shirt and black jeans, arrived on time, and I didn’t even notice that it was him, as there were no bodyguards and a big entourage, which is a typical sighting in any politician-celebrity event.

Verzosa has wholeheartedly embraced the mission of alleviating poverty and expanding healthcare access for those in need. However, his visionary approach extends beyond mere resilience; he firmly believes that genuine progress hinges upon fostering ingenuity and maintaining transparency.
Philanthropic Efforts
Earlier this year, Verzosa showcased his deep-rooted commitment to change in February. He orchestrated a grand fundraising gala at the luxurious Shangrila Hotel in BGC. The event sparkled with an exciting auction. The auction featured a brand-new Maserati and an array of luxury items, including exquisite jewelry. The funds raised supported the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and its cancer ward, extending help to over a hundred graduate cancer patients.
Verzosa’s dedication to impacting society continues with unwavering strength. He remains involved in ongoing fundraising projects, including a highly anticipated event on September 15. Another initiative on his horizon is a charity run planned for November, aiming to surpass the remarkable success of last year’s event, which raised an impressive P53,000.
But his aspirations go beyond fundraising. He’s determined to make a real difference in the lives of people battling severe illnesses. Inspired by personal loss, he’s on a resolute mission to establish a state-of-the-art dialysis center in Sampaloc, a vibrant community. “My dad passed away recently due to kidney disease. He was a dialysis patient, kaya po malapit sa puso ko itong proyektong ito. I’ve experienced the hardship, and for me, no one has to undergo that kind of hardship,” he said when asked about his inspiration behind the project.
Education As A Foundation
He also aims to create the prestigious Gen Roax Elementary School, providing the next generation with a solid educational foundation.
2023 has been transformative for Sam Verzosa, an entrepreneur turned congressman. He completed the London Marathon with the Philippine flag in April despite feeling sick and enduring cold, rainy weather. He ran for a cause, raising over P1 million pesos to help children with cleft lip and palate through the Smile Train Foundation.
In August, SV wrapped up the second season of his public service TV program Dear SV which aired on CNN Philippines. The show shares inspiring stories of everyday Filipinos who remain resilient despite challenges. Through the program, SV spreads hope by providing sustainable livelihood, educational scholarships, employment, and financial assistance.
Reflection Of A Leader
SV reflected as well during the event on the lessons learned from his program. The marathon, and his legislative work, emphasize poverty alleviation, health, and education. His journey as a TV host has brought out the best in him, and he’s grateful for the opportunity CNN Philippines gave him.
SV’s philanthropic journey continues with announcing the “Dear SV Run,” a fun run event for a cause, scheduled for November. He draws inspiration from his late father, whose encouragement and challenge continue to guide him.
His impact is undeniable. His unwavering dedication to helping those in need is a source of inspiration for people from all walks of life. As we witness Sam’s noble pursuits, let’s be moved to mirror his selflessness and determination in our efforts to better society.
