The Plastic Odyssey Expedition Arrives In Manila

In partnership with France Philippines United Action (FPUA), Plastic Odyssey launched the Youth for Dagat program in Manila.

Earlier this month, the Alliance Française de Manille hosted an opening event to celebrate the arrival of the Plastic Odyssey Expedition in the Philippines. The mission is a groundbreaking initiative focused on recycling and reducing plastic pollution around the world.

The event also served as the official launch of the Youth for Dagat program, uniting the French-Filipino community in support of this impactful initiative.

The expedition’s team has sailed across three continents and visited over 20 countries aboard their laboratory ship. Docking in Manila, they continue their mission of addressing plastic pollution in the most affected areas and empowering communities with sustainable solutions.

A Gathering of Environmental Advocates

The program was led by Xavier Leroux, Executive Director of Alliance Française de Manille, and Kevin Charuel, Managing Director of CCI France Philippines.

Rémy Tirouttouvarayane, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of France in the Philippines, and Marie-Maylis Charlat, President of the France Philippines United Action Foundation (FPUA), also delivered warm welcoming remarks.

Kicking off an evening dedicated to collaboration and sustainable innovation, Simon Bernard, president and co-founder of Plastic Odyssey, delivered an inspiring presentation on the global initiative’s mission.

Plastic Odyssey aims to combat plastic pollution through innovative recycling technologies and educational campaigns. Through its expedition, the team has been able to transform plastic waste into valuable resources.

While sailing around the world, they have also fostered a global network of local recycling initiatives, inspiring communities to adopt sustainable practices.

During their month-long stay in the Philippines, the expedition team will be exploring both Manila and Cebu. Among their numerous events is the inauguration of two new recycling micro-factories.

The first of these micro-factories was built in collaboration with global automotive supplier and manufacturer Delfingen, which has been a partner of the expedition for two years now. The inauguration is set to happen today, November 27.

Empowering Filipino Youth

With the launch of the Youth for Dagat program, the FPUA aims to empower the Filipino youth to take action against plastic pollution through a school-based initiative.

The program emphasizes environmental education, equipping students with practical tools to understand and address the harmful impacts of plastic waste.

The program is funded by the French Embassy from the Youth and Oceans Fund as a part of the Blue Nations initiative. It reflects the two countries’ commitment to advocate for climate and ocean protection and also serves as a preparatory step for the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice, France.
