The late rap icon, Tupac, adorned the dazzling gold, ruby, and diamond ring during his final public appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards on September 4, 1996.
Tragically, just three days later, he fell victim to a fatal drive-by shooting in Las Vegas, leaving the music industry mourning his loss at the tender age of 25.
Priceless Gem in the Hip-Hop Realm
Sotheby’s, the auction house, initially estimated the ring’s value to be between US$200,000 and US$300,000.
However, the enthusiastic bidding frenzy pushed the final price to make it “the most valuable hip-hop artifact ever sold.”
Interestingly, this exquisite piece of art was inspired by 16th-century Italian philosopher Niccolo Machiavelli.
This is revealed by Tupac’s godmother and “money manager” Yaasmyn Fula, who graciously put the item up for auction.
The ring’s design, crafted by unidentified New York jewelers, boasts a central cabochon ruby, flanked by two pavé-cut diamonds atop a diamond-encrusted gold band with the touching engraving “Pac & Dada 1996.”
At that time, Tupac was romantically involved with fashion designer Kidada Jones, the daughter of renowned producer Quincy Jones.
