Hero Ingredient: Chanel Officially Enters Sustainable Beauty With Their Newest Range That Honors Coco Chanel’s Favorite Flower

By

Even the flower’s seeds were utilized for the collection’s packaging.

With their newest beauty line, Chanel is officially joining the realm of clean and sustainable beauty. The No.1 de Chanel Collection is the fashion house’s range of skincare, makeup, and fragrances with the camellia flower—the bloom in all of Chanel’s packaging, clothes, jewelry, and clothes.

After all, the brand’s founder, Coco Chanel’s favorite flower, inspired many of her creations.

With camellia the main ingredient, the house utilizes all its parts to avoid waste—from the formulas to packaging. The plant is said to hold revitalizing properties; its oil is used to preserve skin moisture while its Pichia-type yeast can strengthen. Instead of being discarded, its seeds are used in the packaging’s production.

Years in the making

Chanel spent more than a decade researching and developing the range, and they say it can target fine lines, large pores, loss of elasticity, dullness, and wrinkles—the five main signs of aging. Described as “the new generation of beauty,” the nine-piece collection is made in a laboratory in France, headed by international scientific communications director Armelle Souraud.

All formulas are made up of 97 percent natural-origin ingredients, and 76 percent are made of camellia.

Eco-designed

To reduce their carbon footprint, Chanel makes the range’s containers “eco-designed.” On average, 30 percent of the weight of the jars and bottles have been reduced, and the glass jar of the Revitalizing Cream weighs 50 percent less.

According to the brand, lighter materials mean less greenhouse gas emissions. Once a pot is purchased, they are also refillable, so single-use items are also reduced. In addition, the use of plastics was limited, unnecessary paper leaflets were omitted, and the ink used for decorative purposes was all organic.

Since the team made many changes to Chanel’s traditional manufacturing process to be more sustainable, they admit in the press release it was a “genuine technological challenge.” However, they say it remains faithful to the sensory qualities of owning something from Chanel—whether it be the sound of the jar closing to feeling its double C logo engraved on the jar.
