The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary and Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary reinterpret Genta’s original design in contemporary form, distinguished by brushed silver-plated dials inspired by a rare variant of the original Ingenieur SL.
The anniversary editions also feature a subtle modification to the IWC logo: the characteristic lightning bolt traditionally positioned beneath the “Ingenieur” name has been replaced by the number “50,” marking five decades of the design.

When Genta created the Ingenieur SL in 1976, integrated-bracelet luxury sports watches were emerging as an entirely new category within Swiss watchmaking. The Ingenieur SL stood apart with its bold proportions, integrated bracelet, and distinctive design language, even if its significance wasn’t immediately recognized.
Between 1976 and 1983, only 598 pieces of the Ingenieur SL were produced. While the watch wasn’t a commercial success at launch, collectors would eventually rediscover its appeal, turning the original into one of the most sought-after models in IWC’s history.
The Ingenieur SL also became the creative blueprint for the modern Ingenieur, which IWC introduced in 2023. Its defining details—including the bezel secured by five functional screws, structured grid dial and integrated bracelet—remain recognizable in the contemporary collection, now paired with updated ergonomics, wearability, and finishing.
For Alexia Genta, Gérald Genta’s daughter and co-founder of the Gérald Genta Heritage Association, the continued relevance of the design is particularly meaningful. “50 years have passed since my father created the Ingenieur SL, and it amazes me how his work continues to inspire so many people decades later,” she expresses in a statement. “I’m honored to see how IWC is preserving his artistic legacy and building on his iconic design with their new Ingenieur.”
A Closer Look At The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary And Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary (Ref. IW328910) and Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary (Ref. IW324909) are each limited to 1,150 pieces.
What immediately distinguishes the two watches is their brushed silver-plated dials, inspired by a less familiar version of the original Ingenieur SL. While the 1976 Reference 1832 is best known for its structured dial, IWC also produced a rare variant featuring a brushed silver-plated finish.
The anniversary models pair this unique surface with rhodium-plated hands and metal hour markers filled with Super-LumiNova®. The “50” replacing the Ingenieur’s characteristic lightning-bolt logo provides a discreet yet unmistakable marker of the anniversary.
“With its distinctive and bold design, the Ingenieur SL has shaped both the career of Gérald Genta and the history of IWC Schaffhausen. Two Sizes, One Recognizable Character
Both anniversary editions feature stainless-steel cases and integrated bracelets, with detailed finishing that combines satin-finishing and polishing. The bracelets are attached via their middle links, with each model offering its own interpretation of the design.
The 40-millimeter version features a satin-finished bracelet, while the middle links of the 35-millimeter model are polished, creating a subtle delineation between the two sizes.
Both watches retain the characteristic Ingenieur bezel, secured to the case by five screws. Satin-finished surfaces and polished edges further emphasize the sculptural quality of the Genta-inspired design.
Inside the Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary is IWC’s 32111 caliber, an automatic movement with a double pawl winding system and a 120-hour power reserve. Staying true to the original Ingenieur SL’s practical character, the watch also features a soft-iron inner case designed to protect the movement from magnetic fields.
The 35-millimeter model takes a different approach, with a see-through sapphire glass case back revealing the IWC Caliber 47110. The movement is finished with circular graining and Geneva stripes, complemented by a gold-plated oscillating weight.
