It’s almost here! The fashion’s biggest night. The All-Star Game of Entrances. The evening to be impressed, inspired, and confused by fashion. From the theme to the guests, here’s everything you need to know about the party of the year.
The Met Gala or the Met Ball is an annual fundraising event held for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute, an extravaganza of fashion held on the first Monday of May to raise money for the museum’s fashion wing. This year, D-Day is also the first day of the month: Monday, May 1.
Unofficially, they call it “The party of the year”, “The Oscars of the East Coast”, “an ATM for the Met” (according to publicist Paul Wilmot). Well, to understand why Wilmot called it that, last year’s event just raised $17.4M, and for Met’s spring gala, they raised more than $2.6M. Wow, right? What is the secret ingredient?
Well, it’s actually NOT a secret ingredient, but the answer? Two words: Anna Wintour. The Vogue editor and the gala’s chief mastermind since 1999. She has turned the event into an impressive gathering of famous fashion powerhouses.
Is there a theme?
This year’s show is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, a tribute to the late designer who died in 2019 after serving the fashion world for decades. Since the guests are instructed to dress “in honor of Karl,” expect a lot of Fendi, Chanel, and Lagerfeld, as well as the brands where Lagerfeld worked early in his career like Chloé, Balmain, and Patou.
Who will be there?
Joining Wintour are Penélope Cruz, Dua Lipa, Roger Federer, and Michaela Coel as the 2023 Met Gala co-chairs. The Met Gala is by-invitation only, and entry is not just about price. Wintour has the final say over every invitation and attendee. So who will be there? Past and present Chanel ambassadors such as Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, and Pharrell Williams may well show up.
There were rumors that the Kardashians will not be invited this year but that turned out not to be the case, and Kim will definitely make an entrance. If you can remember, her decision to starve herself to fit into Marilyn Monroe’s famous “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress became the controversy of the night, which raises the curiosity of the spectators about what Kim will wear this time around.

It is always difficult to say how the celebrities and designers will interpret this year’s Met Ball theme, but that’s something to look forward to, right?
