Hoseki Jewelry Art Celebrates Its Anniversary With “The Allure of Pearls”

By

Marking a milestone for Hoseki Jewelry Art, the show examines the creative parallels between contemporary art and jewelry design.

The Allure of Pearls, the Hoseki Jewelry Art anniversary exhibition running at Art Lounge Manila through June 30, brings together nearly 30 Filipino artists working across painting, sculpture, and mixed media, all responding to a single gem and what it means to create something beautiful under pressure. The show is mounted in partnership with the Mandaluyong gallery space, doubling as a jubilee and curatorial statement about where Philippine contemporary art and jewelry design intersect. It’s also an exhibition that nods to the country’s own epithet, “Pearl of the Orient Seas,” a phrase José Rizal used in his final poem, “Mi Último Adiós.”

How Hoseki Jewelry Art Uses The Pearl As A Canvas

At the center of the exhibition hangs Roel Obemio’s tribute to Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” perhaps the most audacious piece in the show precisely because it courts comparison so directly. Obemio accompanies it with a series of paintings on spherical canvases, the shape of the pearl itself becoming the format.

Hoseki was founded by jewelry designer Fai Co, who built the company around the idea that wearable objects could hold the same weight as gallery work. Together with partner and Chief Creative Officer Knoi Austria Esmane, both of whom show their own work in this exhibition, Co grew the house into one of the country’s most internationally recognized jewelry brands, accumulating more than thirty design awards over its run.
