Making a Statement: Dua Lipa Shuts Down Rumors That She Will Perform at the Qatar World Cup

By

The pop superstar says she’ll be visiting Qatar “when it had fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup.”

After the rumors that Dua Lipa will perform at the Qatar World Cup’s opening, the singer has publicized that she was never in talks to make an appearance.

“I will not be performing and nor have I ever been involved in any negotiation to perform,” the three-time Grammy winner wrote on Instagram. “I will be cheering England on from afar, and I look forward to visiting Qatar when it had fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup.”

In 2012, Qatar won the bid to host the global sporting event. The bidding process can take over a decade, so the selected host country has ample time to develop and prepare infrastructure and other event requirements.

However, in February last year, The Guardian reported that 6,500 migrant workers died in Qatar since the World Cup was awarded to the nation. Although the death records were not categorized by occupation, those deceased were likely employed on World Cup infrastructure projects.

The confirmed performers for the Qatar World Cup’s opening on November 20 include BTS’ Jung Kook, the Black Eyed Peas, and J Balvin.
