Craft Journey: It All Starts With Hand-Harvested Weber Blue Agave And 62 Hands To Create This Super-Premium Tequila - Featured Article

Exclusively produced in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, Patrón tequila is still made in small batches and with the same commitment to quality and craftsmanship since 1989.

According to the brand, “Patrón tequila, the world’s number one super-premium tequila crafted back in 1989 with a deep-rooted history in Jalisco, Mexico, remains number one with its meticulous craftsmanship, ensuring that every sip is simply perfect.”

The craft journey begins

The brand adds, “The journey starts with the heart of Patrón tequila, the Blue Agave, which is carefully cultivated and hand-harvested upon its maturity, a process that takes six to eight years. Anything that does not meet the high-quality standard is not accepted.”

The brand narrates that the harvest is then brought back to Hacienda Patrón, where every single one of the piñas undergoes cooking in traditional clay brick ovens with alternating periods of steaming and resting for 79 hours. This is all done in only 106 small batch brick ovens, which ensure consistent cooking to achieve the fruity flavors.

The benefits of a meticulous process

After the Agave is cooked, they move on to the milling and crushing. The brand elaborates that “the procedure used by Patrón is the Tahona method, which entails crushing the Agave between two non-volcanic rocks and extracting 70% of the juice; the fiber is left for continuous fermentation to add more flavor.”

Because of the time-consuming process, not all tequila brands undergo it. Patrón tequila does this “to capture more of the essential tasting notes to make the final product simply perfect.”

The next essential step is fermentation. Patrón uses a double distillation process to remove and boil off harsh by-products resulting in a much smoother liquid. To keep the flavor consistent, it takes place in Patrón‘s 167 hot copper pots.

Pure and unadulterated

The liquid then undergoes aging after fermentation and depending on the category, the aging process may go for up to three years in the highest quality barrels. Because absolutely no additives are added, it ensures a pure and unadulterated tequila.

Bottling the tequila is performed carefully and is the only machine assisted process in its entire journey. Once filled, the bottles are meticulously hand corked, labeled, and wrapped.

By this time, that bottle of Patrón tequila has passed through 60 hands before reaching the customers’ own two hands, ready to be enjoyed neat or as a cocktail–whether the Paloma, The Patrón Margarita or the Patrónic. The brand encourages all to enjoy Patrón Tequila responsibly.
