Setting The Table: Stories From Home With Casa Juan

By

Through heritage motifs and modern collaborations, Casa Juan turns everyday dining into a cultural experience, one plate at a time.

There’s something compelling about a well-set table. It invites conversation, signals care, and, in the case of Casa Juan, tells a story. Since its launch in 2020, the homegrown brand has been reimagining how Filipino identity can live, not just in wardrobes or galleries, but in the everyday rituals of dining and gathering.

Founded by Michelle Asence-Fontelera, Casa Juan was born from a familiar yet transformative moment: browsing through the homeware aisles of department stores abroad. Surrounded by porcelain and chinaware, Michelle began to imagine something more personal—pieces that could both decorate a table and carry the essence of a place. In her case, that place was home.

The Idea That Brought Casa Juan Home

The concept for Casa Juan took shape in 2019, when Michelle envisioned an artisan-focused homeware brand that could translate the richness of Philippine culture into objects meant for daily use. The intention was simple, but ambitious: to “bring home a piece of Philippine life and culture into every home—one plate at a time.”

What followed was a period of deep research and thoughtful development, resulting in Casa Juan’s first collections. These drew from an array of local influences: ikat prints from Mindanao, batik patterns reminiscent of the malong, and the striking imagery of the Philippine hornbill. The pieces felt at once familiar and fresh, slipping easily into contemporary tablescapes while carrying layers of cultural meaning.

Designing with Purpose and Collaboration

“Even from the very start, our vision was to create products that tell the story of the Philippines,” says Asence-Fontelera. “We are guided by the country’s spirit of bayanihan or communal unity, strong familial bonds, friendliness, hospitality, and generosity.”

That ethos is present in both Casa Juan’s designs and its approach to creation itself. The brand thrives on collaboration, working closely with designers, artists, and makers to expand its narrative. A collection with Kaayo celebrates the artistry of Mindanao, while limited-edition releases with Rajo Laurel bring a fashion-forward perspective to the table. Meanwhile, partnerships with artists such as Kora Dandan Albano, Dominic Rubio, and Juvenal Sanso have transformed functional pieces into collectible works of art.

Asence-Fontelera shares, “We are passionate about promoting our artistry and culture. This is why we have always felt the importance of showcasing our designers and artists through collaborations. Not only do we make art and design more accessible to many, we also tell the story of the Philippines–our history, culture, and creative spirit–through our products.”
