For the well-traveled, you may have passed the small country of Liechtenstein. It lies between Austria and Switzerland, nestled among the Alpine mountains. Some may only see this as a corridor between two territories. Yet a visit to this country gives you a one-of-a-kind experience of their rich culture, picturesque skiing destination, and Michelin-starred restaurants, making them truly among the world’s majestic places.

A lesson on Liechtenstein
A review of the country’s history reveals the Princely House of Liechtenstein began its rule in the 12th century. Though the family originally hailed from lower Austria, they had to move when the invasion of the Nazis began in Europe. Eventually, the family acquired and developed the country that it has become one of the world’s highest GDP per capita. At present, the Prince of Liechtenstein remains the head of state. He runs a constitutional monarchy and direct democracy. This means citizens can still cast their votes on addressing issues like tax reform. With a population of over 30,000, the citizens pretty much know one another. They are humble and friendly and they currently control the population growth to protect their resources and equilibrium in the small land.
One would not think the Liechtenstein family are royals when you see them on the street. They are down-to-earth and modest in the way they carry themselves though they own the Liechtenstein Global Trust (LGT), the world’s largest family-owned private banking. Asset management of about 215 billion francs and private banking are among their services. Apart from dabbling in the finance landscape, the family also manages Wilfersdorf Agriculture, Kalwang Forest, and Liechtenstein winery and Rice Tec.

The royal rendezvous
The family is also a purveyor of arts and culture. The Vaduz Castle, the official residence of the reigning Prince Hans-Adam III, houses their sizable collection of paintings and historical armament. They hung in storage facilities and temperature-controlled rooms that a tour seem like a stroll into Willy Wonka’s factory. Various art pieces situate themselves within the walls of the medieval castle. It gives a homey feel despite the grandeur of the interiors.
Outside the castle, one can dine at Marée, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the country. It takes on a welcoming home atmosphere with its dining room. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows give you a breathtaking view of the Alpine mountains. Among Marée’s spread includes salmon with carpaccio, roasted swiss veal fillet with herb tale, white chocolate peach, and thyme crème sorbet.
The country of Liechtenstein may be small yet a visit is certainly memorable, with its endearing culture and warm hospitality.
